156 Wiper Problem

I am new to the forums so please be gentle. I have just purchased a 2000 plate (V) 156 2.5 V6 Q-System car and I must say I am loving it. This morning while driving to work, the wipers refused to work. Didnt matter what I did with the stick they would not move. When I got to work I tried again and they worked although not sure for how long.

Is there a common fault on the motor or contacts etc that need to be cleaned or will I need a new motor.

I got home from work and the tools came out. There was power going to the motor and I gave it a tap and it worked. It then stopped again so again, I gave it a tap and again it worked.

Is this motor worth repairing or will I need a new one. The previous owner tells me it was stood for a month or so before I bought it so does it just need some use?

I have never done it on this car. But I have taken pleanty of motors apart and cleaned them for this very reason. The latest was the fan motor in the oven. I have always had good luck unless the bearings are shot.

Just be careful with the brushes, and make sure you put them back in the same way. Remember that they are spring loaded. You can clean the commutator with a pencil eraser if not too dirty, or fine sandpaper. Lubricate the bearings (this is usually the problem on a notor that spends its life outside). You may need to roll up the sandpaper and give them a quick clean as well as the shaft. Not too much oil. You do not want oil from the bearings to get on the commutator.

the most common issue with 156 wiper fault usually lies in the three brass rings at the very top of the wiper motor connection section.

it usually presents itselfs by not parking correctly, losing the intermittent settings, or the wash/wipe control fails to act on demand, but it is known that the motors will fail altogether too, and will likely be a brush, armature issue.

some folk have managed to squeeze some more life out them by stripping and repairing the brass rings and sprung contacts, but to be honest, i i found a brand new motor at shop4parts was only about 50 ish, so i didn't hesitate seeing as this would have all the intermittent, wash wipe, and park controls already attached and included too.

isn't it just sods law that you'll fix one thing then another part of it will fail?
