Thanks Scott, you know 20 years ago I would have just stripped the thing and repair it, after owning a few Land Rovers, I just do not have the energy to try and work in those silly small spaces any more :-)
It will have to get a cam belt change in the next year or so again, then I will have it done while they are at it.
The bottom hose is definitely the better place, I just could not find the place or the correct hoses to make it work down there at the time. This is after all just a temporary measure.
As for the recirculation and hot spot issues, a small hole in the thermostat makes sure that the electric pump does cycle the coolant to get representative coolant temperature at the thermostat should the mechanical pump fail completely.
