i have just changed the gearbox on my 2001 selespeed (gearbox with actuator still attached from running donor car) i completed the install car starts pump runs but it wont select a gear it tries but click and nothing can anyone help???
Try and get yourself a KKL/VAGCOM cable of ebay or rarebear on this site and a copy of FiatECUscan or Alfadiag for your laptop so you can do the EOL calibration. NB you only need to modify cable to connect to airbags etc.
I replaced my selespeed gearbox on its own (without actuator) and had the very same issue i.e. not able to select any gear or indeed anything at all until I did an EOL calibration. Also check clutch rod length is 28mm, plenty previous posts about this, by the way welcome
It will not select gears if the clutch rod is not set!
Find pin 7 on the big sele multiplug, the multiplug next to the battery! Its a green wire, with ign on mar this wants to read 3.4 volts! Adjust clutch rod to get this figure! This may just get it selecting gears, but will still need setting up properly and calibrating!
Thanks 'MAD_DOG' that seems to be the general consensus tht it needs setting up, whats the going rate then for the alfadiag set up proceedure so i make sure i'm not being ripped off? cheers again lee.
Thanks 'AOPA25' i do enjoy working on these alfa t spark engines once you have the nak of them they are easy, bit weak but thats a relatively easy sort for the pleasure they deliver.
Just also bear in mind that if it won't EOL calibrate and has error codes P1741 and/or P1742, that probably means the gearchange position sensors have become disconnected from their linkages during the fitting of the actuator.
Mine was extremely unwilling to do anything until I took the actuator off again, removed the rear plate (with the little Torx screws) and hooked those linkages back up. At least that doesn't cost anything - just more time! Don't bother trying to remove the rear plate with the actuator in place... you can't see what you're doing and you can only reach the rear sensor linkage that way
One linkage (front sensor) is a small crank that fits over two wire rods on the casting that goes on the selector rod. The other (rear sensor) is a lightly-spring-loaded arm that rests on the casting. It is easy for either of these to slip out of place during the fitting of the actuator. There is a tool (a sleeve) that holds the casting in place while it is removed from the gearbox selector rod, to prevent this problem of the linkages slipping out.
Hi Alex, thanks for the info, The actuator was never removed from the replacement box i took the whole unit (box with actuator still attached) out of the donor car so could this problem still exist? just want to be clear about what i am doing cheers Lee
It doesn't matter that the actuator never left the gearbox, it's still not the actuator that is paired with the ECU so it requires the NEW actuator and EOL calibration functions to be run on it so that the ECU can learn the resistance of the pots when the box is in gear.
Thanks 'Smaky' is it worth me dowloading the software then and doing it myself? my local alfa guy says he hasnt got the kit so refered me to the dealer in Northampton.
just buy alfadiag (50 ukp) and a KKL cable..... and you are the master of your Sele.. dealers will empty your
wallet with pleasure !!! (and in the process make sure you come back)
rarebear i hear you are the main man when it comes to getting this cable so do you have a link? and where can i download this software 'alfadiag' cheers Lee
