Go for it! Yes, like anything there are a few horror stories, and like many Alfa horror stories it stems from neglected maintainence or abuse. I had a 156 sele for a couple of years and it was great fun and you could very much drive it to suit your mood. There's something very F1 and great about coming into sa corner on the brakes and pulling the leaver to downchange. There's more satifaction doing it manually, but also more hassle. As has been mentioned, keep the oil fresh and the sensors calibrated and it should give years of trouble free motoring.
The only big problems you get tend to be big sensor, ecu or pump failures, but these are rare and there are now enough reconditioned units in circulatiuon that it's not ruinously expensive like it used to be.
