I used to take my car's to a specialist but discovered that he doesn't fully charge the system in older cars as he's afraid of them blowing. He won't even use dyes as they are very hazardous in case of a ruptured line. He does all his work by hand too (gauges, bottle, etc...) so I was never really satisfied by the results especially with the extreme heat we get over here. I have found that the machine my mechanic uses has managed to give my old leaky 164 system a new lease of life. Works a treat even in the high 90's and even the 156 is not too bad either (crapiest air con I've ever had). So can they blow? Apparently. Is it avoidable? I would say so but I prefer to take the risk in this part of the world and have a decent system.
