Help Manual Gearbox failure on a 156

Has anyone else experienced problems with their 156 gearbox? A good friend of mine has a 1999 2.0TS with less than 60k on the clock. The second gear has just started to 'crunch' when the unit gets warm and his mechanic recommends a rebuild or replacement.
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Has the gearbox oil ever been changed?

Re: Manual Gearbox failure on a 156

The same thing happened to my last 156, a 1.8TS, crunching when going into 2nd at highish revs. It needed a 2nd gear synchro ring.(this was at 12k miles) It was fixed under warranty then went again 20k miles later, and fixed under warranty again, apparantly it is not that rare an occurance!
