Help! 156 1.8 Non Starting Problem - ECU?
After a bit of helpÖ.
2 weeks ago my 1999 156 1.8TS (manual gearbox) refused to start. It was working great the day before, came down the next morning and car turned over fine, but would not start. If did start a few time but would not rev and just died straight away. RAC come and diagnosed an intermittent spark (using a spark checker between the plug and coil), and suggested that it may be the crank sensor at fault. Got the car towed to Alfa Tech in Huddersfield where itís been for the last two weeks.
They plug in the examiner and the car does not have any fault codes, and the crank sensor is showing 200-300rpm when turning over. Some times the car does start but wont rev over approx 2k rpm. Once the car does not start, then can unplug the ECU, replug it back in and it will start but wonít rev, and then goes back to not starting. They tell me that they having tried a new crack sensor, and coils and now suspect its the ECU. Iíve just bought a new ECU, Code Box and Keychip but it seemís the onc I have bought are not matched! So the immobiliser light wonít go out and the car wont start.
So, do you guys think it could be the ECU, should I just bite the bullet and source another (matched!) ECU, code box and key chip? Anything else it could be? The car was working great before, but costís are mounting up! Do ECUís often go wrong?
Any help please? Iím now thinking of getting it back from Alfa Tech (as they seem pretty stumped) and try to fix it myself, but not sure where to start!
