Squeaking at high speed and some other issues
My beloved 156 SW (2.4 20v, m.y. 10/2003) has just developed a new group of issues:
- Glow plug light occasionally stays flashing when switching the key to MAR. FiatEcuScan shows error code P0683 - glow plug relay; if removed, the error (and associated code) come back. It seems to happen either when starting with a warm engine or when the car's been in the sun for an extended interval.
- At high speed (around 160 km/h) there's a loud squeaking / creaking / whistling coming from somewhere in front of the car (dashboard, windshield or farther ahead); the noise does vary with the position of the gas pedal (louder when accelerating, lower when foot off the pedal), but not with engine rpm (160 km/h is about 3000 rpm in 6th, but the noise is not there when doing 3000 rpm in any other gear).
- I can also hear a squealing coming from the belt area at idle; water pump, timing belt, tensioner, two auxiliary tensioners replaced in the last year. Any chance this would be related with the previous issue? The car doesn't seem to be overheating (as much as I can trust an Alfa gauge).
- Car seems to be smoking far more than before - basically any push on the gas pedal leaves a cloud of black smoke.
I'm not looking to get the problems fixed over the internet (especially as I'm completely inept when it comes to car mechanics), but to get an idea as to what might be wrong - whether it's safe to still drive the car before getting it serviced. The squeaking at high speed is the most worrying, I'm wondering if it may be a sign of the turbo heading for the exit...
