Removing 156 gear knob

Does anyone have any good tips on how to remove the standard gear knob on a 2000 156? I've tried mole grips to crack the bonding glue i think it is that's worked but it's so tight on the shaft it just won't pull up off it, I think the only logical solution is to cut it off but does anyone have any other ideas?

Heat it up with something, like a hair dryer?

Brute strength is all u need, watch your chin though, new knob just pushes on and is just as tight.

Brute force and a bit of twisting should get it off - watch you don't smack yourself in the face with it though!
