Dads 156 1.8TS Overheating

Hello, been a little while since I have posted on here!

My Dads 156 1.8TS has an overheating problem, both when around town and also on the motorway. I had a quick look last night and these were my observations:

Radiator is in good condition
Fans kick in if the connection is removed from the grey sensor on the thermostat

Thats about as far as I got as it was going dark.

What else can I check?

Thermostat might be stuck closed. feel the black rubber hose going from the rad. it should be hot after a few minutes of starting. plenty of threads on this if you have a look
