Engine Oil mixing with Diesel?

Alfa 156 2.4 20v Mjet

My spanner monkey (sorry any mechanics reading this, but I was a spanner monkey too once) tells me that he thinks the engine oil is mixing with the diesel in my engine because it hasn't been changed in while, the engine oil level is over full and I haven't topped it up in about 6 months because the readings are always full... Is this possible?

Cam belt and half the engine was changed about a year ago after a fatal break, did they bodge something on the rebuild?

The 16 / 20v engines do not use any oil, so if it is overful was too much used at the oil change? If there is diesel in the oil you should be able to smell it by opening the filler cap. How much more than "full" is showing on the dip stick? Too much will be a problem.
