Firstly , as soon as your engine cuts out the power steering will always go firm and is normal.
Does your car run ok generally or is there a slight hesitation when accelerating. There are a couple of things to check without paying anything out first.
1. Have a look at air intake pipe that comes off your air filter box. There is a short bit of ribbed (crinkly) pipe that can quite often become split. Take it off and have a good look for any small cracks .
2. On the air filter box there is the MAF, it's an air flow sensor and is a fairly common fault and can cause the car to stall when pulling up at junctions etc. Just unplug the sensor and take it for a drive, the car will tick over roughly but should cure your problem temporarily. There are loads of threads on here about MAFS and how and where to unplug them.
If cash is a problem as your young, try and find a local Alfa independent specialist as these are a lot cheaper than a main dealer and usually better. If your in the west midlands I can point you in the right direction of one.
Don't give up on the Alfa yet , oh and damn cool car for a 17 year old.
At 10,000 rpm , no one can hear you scream.
