Need Some Help With Gearbox Diagnosis!
Was hoping for some info on diagnosing the cause of a rattling gearbox.
Car sometimes used to make a little squeel for about 2 seconds when starting from cold (in the very cold weather we had over the winter) - although I haven't heard this for a while. Eliminated all belts and tensioners on the aux and camshaft drive, so nothing wrong there.
When the engine is under load, the rattling noise is rather loud. What I mean is, as an example, travelling uphill in 6th gear at 40/50mph, although if I drop back down the box, the noise quietens down. If I also depress the clutch ever so slightly/slip the clutch, the noise stops altogether. Could this possibly be the input shaft bearing? There is also a slight oil leak coming from this end of the gearbox.
I have also noticed that going from 4th to 5th gear is a bit of a mission. 5th is very close to 3rd on the gate, which I actually noticed after I fitted new linkage bushes. Have a look at the rather poor picture - that is the easiest way to explain.
I am praying that this isn't a new gearbox job. In fairness, the problem has always been there and hasn't got any worse, but is really starting to get on my nerves!
Any help appreciated!
