147 oil issue - low compression - engine rebuild
Need to find cause of piston ring damage and loss of compression in cyliner 1 for warranty purposes!!
Not a happy bunny!
My 147 2.0 TS broke down a week a go whilst driving on M6 down to London. Blue smoke started to come out of the exhaust so i pulled over, and then started getting error messages on dash, 'major engine fault' etc or something similar, and low engine oil pressure. The car was very juddery as i pulled over on hard shoulder.
Called AA etc, they determined no oil in car, even though i had topped up before i left for the journey. AA took it to nationwide the next morning, who determined that the oil filter seal was broken/worn out/failed and was leaking oil. Before AA took it to nationwide in the morning i did fill up nearly 4 litres of oil after they towed it, to see if i could get it started, and see if the error messages was still there, and yes, the oil had simply poured out of the bottom of the engine, big oil slick no less under neath car, at which point AA towed it to nationwide.
Anyway Nationwide replaced the oil filter and topped up with oil, but reported that the engine had major damage in the process of being driven at high speed on motorway with no oil. He mentioned piston ring had melted, piston head damage, no compression in cylinder 1.
They refused to strip the engine and rebuild it, so the car is now with Alfarama in Stanmore, who have reported the same issues with the engine.
Not sure what to do, it has been suggested that the engine be replaced with an exchange direct from Alfa Romeo rather than rebuild etc, as too much damage has been caused. Before the solution is found, i need to find the cause so i can validate the repair work under AA warranty, which may amount to circa £3k according to Alfarama. Alfarama are reluctant to strip the engine to find the definete cause unless specifically insutructed by AA, of which i may have to pay for this diagnostic procedure.
What would have caused the piston ring to melt and loss of compression in cylinder 1? How could the oil filter seal fail, could it have been fitted incorectly (6 months ago as part of major service including cambelt change). Need to find a likely cause if possible, without having to strip the engine down!
Can anyone advise?
I've got AA Warranty (5 Star cover - upto £3000)
