GT/147 door handles breaking - an observation
After some chavvy wee ba$tard had a go at trying my car and breaking the door handle my heart sank. However tonight I observed one possible cause and something that should perhaps be done periodically. At the end that is hinged (ie the opposite end to the key slot) is a small hinge which appeared to be partially siezed. This will obviously conribute to the breakage rate on these. A spray of GT85 lubricant while pulling the handle out seems to help. Spray the top of the metal plate you can see under there and also spray in the back - you will see an opening to so so. Also at the end nearet the lock you will see a guide that the handle uses. Spray the lubricant into this prior to releasing the handle. I did my passenger side too and the difference is quite marked.
Don't know if I have explained too well, but will try to show in highly amateurish photoshopped pic. Looks like it's been written by my 6 year old in crayon, but for illustration purposes it will suffice.
Oh - and I seem to have fixed the break with a liberal application of metal bonding glue
