Sticky Boot on GT JTD, compatibility?

I have a split inner gaiter on my Alfa GT, yesterday i had a look at it and noticed that the wider part has an irregular fit (not round), would it be possible to fit a universal sticky over the original wide section, and has anyone used the bailcast sticky boots on there GT/147?? Of course i know it would be better to replace with a proper boot, but i cant afford any work to be done right now, hence the shortcut...

The item im looking at is on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Split-Driveshaft-Gaiter-CV-Boot-Cover-Kit-ties-grease-/270543337146?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3efda3b6ba

Don't waste your time, they don't work. Must admit I've never looked at the driveshaft boots, I find it strange that the wide end of the boot isn't round....what shape is it....and what's it held on by? I shall have to have a look later.

I've used the stretchable type like this in the past, comes with the cone to apply them with. Downside to this is you need to get the driveshaft nut off which is big and bl00dy tight.

Don't be put off though, 2 haynes spanners job, even allowing for the cost of the tools (if you can't borrow them) you'll be quids in.

Cheers mate, it is round visually but it (if memory serves me ) fits onto a squarish shape so what im saying is that the outer is round but inside its shaped to fit.

I did consider the stretch-a-boot and ive done some basic stuff like top arms and drop links but im not sure how i would go about getting to the driveshaft, seen loads of threads about it but cant find a step by step thred.

Pretty simple, put a steel wheel on (I would think your spare is a steel) the driveshaft nut is in the middle of the wheel, can't remember whether there's a cover on it, if there is it'll just prise off.

Loosen the nut with the wheel on the floor, might help if you have someone in the car with their foot on the brake. You'll need a big socket and a long breaker bar to undo it.

All you have to do is remove enough gubbins to allow the suspension strut to swing outward off the driveshaft, if you've done the top arms you can clearly turn a spanner so you should be able to do it.

Make sure the driveshaft is well supported and isn't pulled out of the gearbox. It's recommened to use a new driveshaft nut when refitting. If you don't get any other advice I'll post the eLearn instructions tomorrow.

So are you saying that i could get one of those stretchys on from the hub side to fit next to the gearbox i.e inner gaiter??:)
I would have said yes, providing there are no sharp edges on the clips of the outer boot, you could wrap them in electric tape if there was anything that might damage the new boot as it passes over the outer boot

But, without looking there must be something unusual about the inners, if we look at that eBay link above it says..

THE KIT CONTAINS:

INSTRUCTIONS
1 X INNER OR OUTER CV BOOT (147 1.9TD, 2.0i OUTER ONLY)
1 X CONE
2 X STAINLESS STEEL FIXING STRAPS
1 X 60G GREASE SACHET

...why would it say 'outer only' for the 1.9TD, 2.0i ?

I shall poke my head under there in the morning and have a look.

All the best
