156 V6 Gearbox - DIY swap?
My 156 V6 has (as of yesterday) a noisey gearbox, after 115k miles. This is mainly in 5th or 6th gear at above 50mph when torque is applied, and there is a high pitched whiny sound. It is 100% silent in neutral, or at any speed with the clutch pushed in. The gearbox will also now pop out of 5th if you blip the throttle whilst in this gear.
All the gears select normally, there is no graunchy sounds, and the car drives as it should. Just the "tight bearing whine" sound and occassional popping out of 5th gear.
I want to swap in a replacement gearbox - how realistic is this to do in the driveway if you have space and time? I am guessing:
i) Battery tray and intake trunking out
ii) Front suspension apart enought to pull out both drive shafts.
iii) Undertray off and all the gearbox mounts
I am less sure off:
iv) Exhaust needs to be disconnected to allow gearbox to drop away?
vi) Subframe dropped for this task?
vii) Engine moved over so that gearbox and clutch can come apart? Is there space?
So come on, who has done this, and is it acheivable? Gulp!
