My 156 V6 Veloce 2001 recently developed a high pitch whine or whistle from just off idle upwards. I removed the aux belt and it went. So if felt the movement of the tensioner and it felt a bit rough. The belt was well cracked as well. So i ordered a kit (belt, tensioner both idlers) and fitted it today. Negligable difference. Very annoying!!
So it must be either alternator, AC , PAS pump or water pump.
Now my water pump was replaced with cambelt 20000 miles ago (I have a £1250(!!)
bill to prove (previous company owner) but that did include full service and starter and was a main dealer- still alot though).
Question 1. How do I prove which item is faulty? I cant tell from just listening. Knowing my luck its the water pump!! Ive worked on (and rebuilt) a lot of engines in my time but never seen behind the cam belt covers on a V6 Alfa!! No sign of a leak.
Now on the V6 the cambelt does not drive the water pump I believe (its driven by two small ares of aux belt (great design!)) so
Question 2. Is it possible to remove the water pump without the cambelt. If not why not and if yes has anyone done it?
Question 3. Has anyone had this noise long term on a V6 and what happened? Im not worried if it turns out to be the alternator but what about a whiney water pump?
I must say that ive never heard a water pump make quite such a high pitch noise (IF it is that)but there lots of things I had not seen before I bought my 156!!
As always thanks in advance!
