alternator problems

Hey, wanted some advice,
broke down on Friday and dude from AA said it's the alternator thats broken which makes sense cos we had the low battery warning light on. We took it to a local garage who said they couldn't fix it because the alternator is behind the engine, so we need to take it to an alfa specialist.

Any idea how easy it is to replace it and roughly how much it should cost- is it a case of taking the whole engine out to get to it?
I have a 2002 147 lusso twin spark

auto electricians usually can do relatively cheap recons, they can also check if diagnosis is correct as well, and no its not engine out
