Gt Immobiliser Fault

I have just in the past week started to get an immobiliser fault when trying to start my 2004 Gt.It happens say 20% of the time.I had it with my mechanic today and he is fairly convinced that it is a key-related problem. He has Alfa diagnostics but not covering security. The battery in the car is fresh.
What do you guys think?-Has anyone else on here had the problem?.

Thing is I live 60 miles from an Alfa dealer so a visit is 1/2 day lost at work,And I only have one key.

It happens to mine quite regularly, it shows up as an error on alfadiag. Once cleared it doesnt come back for ages so have never bothered investigating any further
