There was actually a Service Bulletin sent to all Alfa UK Dealers Mid-2002 saying something to the effect of:
“Thoroughly inspect cambelt @ 36000miles/3-years.”
The problem is that to fully inspect a cambelt you need to remove it, and you would NEVER put an old cambelt back on anyway.
Quite often it is actually the tensioners that fail.
In most other countries Alfa simply said:
“Replace cambelt & tensioners @ 36000miles/3-years.” Which made the situation a lot clearer!
In most cases, for cars which have always been serviced on time, Alfa will carryout this work F.O.C at the 36000mile/3-year service.
Often booking it as a warrenty claim for Variator failure.
Mine was done FOC @ the 48000mile service in Sept 2002 (just after the bulletin was sent out).
