Help Squeaky wheel, handbrake seized on????

I've had a horribly squeaky wheel (rear passenger) for a few weeks, initially it was just when i was going slow but by yesterday was really loud. Didn't have a clue what it was but the wheel was roasting hot! got up this morning to find it practically in the boot of the neighbours car as the handbrake cable has snapped? there is no play in it at all but it still makes the usual cranky noise you expect. drove it today and no squeaky wheel, am i right in thinking the squeak was the handbrake seized on?? anyone know if this will have damaged the wheel as it has been driven for about two weeks like this and i have the mot in 3 weeks!! have been quoted 120 by alfa for the cable replacement, not sure if thats good or bad? any thoughts would be appreciated!!

The brake pads may have worn down a bit but it shouldn't have done any harm. The caliper could be sticking though.

120? - If that's just for replacing the cable, that's exorbitant....replacement cable from a specialist like Alternative Autos is about 19 IIRC, and its about 5 - 15 minutes to fit if you know what you are doing, depending on how much access you've got to the underside of the car....

If the rear caliper needs stripping and pads replacing, obviously the cost will be a bit more......
