many thanks for your time in advance to anyone who responds to this; I'm very appreciative of your help and guidance.
I bought my first Alfa 2 weeks ago ('99 156 2.0 TS) and have noticed the some problems developing to the point I have booked the car into Gus at Alfatune to have a few things done.
. - The idle speed that was perfectly on 800rpm when I bought it has now started to fluctuate from firstly after starting at 1000-1100 then it drops to around 900-1000 then it drops to 800, all after around 2 mins from starting. It also drops off to the point of stalling a few times for maybe 2 seconds before going back up to 800rpm or thereabouts. Once the car has been run gently for a few hundred yards/ or few minutes the idle speed at junctions etc seems to be on the money at 800rpm again and will then be like that for most of the day, unless I start from cold again.
. - If I apply anything more than 50% throttle in any gear, there is severe misfiring/strangulation of power to the point that for example in 3rd gear it takes on the form of a Daewoo Matiz trying to get past 60mph. This strangulation/misfire is also always present from around 3000rpm onwards. I have done the throttle reset after reading and reading about it on the forums and for the first minute or two after it's reset it's like driving a new car n that it revs seemlessly without any stuttering, but is still strangled beyond 3000rpm. Acceleration is around 50% of what it should be after the start of the strangulation. I MAY be right that fuel consumption goes waaay down once above 3000rpm when the strangulation is at its worst also. I'm keeping it under 3000rpm and being a good boy with my right foot as much as possible for now. Note the engine management light has been permanently on all the time.
. - Cambelt - I know, I know get it done! (have no history with the car and it's on 96k miles) I am
getting the cambelt, tensioners etc, aux belt, balance 'something or other', variator, water pump, oil filter, water filter and a full diagnostic of the above faults sorted by Gus (fingers crossed) for £550 all in!! I'd like to have some knowledge and ammunition before I go in so any money I spend is put to good use in fixing the above problems, although appreciate that apparently Gus is the man! and will go with what he says.
All my other issues I've noted are relatively easy to diagnose and fix such as the common front suspension squelching combined with slightly uneven tyre wear, rattling/ringing like a bell cat/middle section of the exhaust, and then just cosmetic things such as interior bulbs needing replacement and rear elec window fuse gone etc.
ANY advice if it is obvious to any of you Alfa enthusiasts what any or all of these faults are, is believe me very very very much appreciated. I accept alot of this has been already discussed to the nth degree over various collections of threads, but would like advice specific if possible to my car.
