147 fire in cabin due to speedo failure? Instruments dead
Two electrical disasters in both our Alfa's all in one week! My 156 has duff alternator, and now the wife's 147 is a mobile firework.
Coming home tonight - random bulb fail messages on the display for bulbs that were working fine, then an ABS fail light, then ASR fail, then no speedo, then no instruments at all, then a very strong smell of burning, and then lots of smoke from the steering column area!
Now, that morning the left rear brake light was staying on after I parked it, regardless of the key being in the ignition or not. I seem to remember that this is a sympton of a failing Speedo (with the CPU inside starting to die). Can't seem to find threads on this - what terms should I enter?
So - can I just replace the instrument/clock set in the dash with a new set with similar mileage from a car being broken for spares, and all is well? Will my key still work, or will there be code issues?
I still stink from the burn insulation smell...
Please help! Car is a 2001 1.6 147 manual with 62k miles.
