I have the same problem.
I'm dismissing the motor theory for my case because I replaced my wiper linkage about 2 years ago and the intermittant stopping still happens.
I also thought about changing the wiper stalks but wanted to consult an auto electrician first. I always thought that the fact that the rear wiper switch seemed to free-up the front wipers point to an electrical/switch problem!
In the meantime, until you sort the fault out, I can highly recommend Rainex spray (not the stuff you put in with the washer fluid). I've had my wipers stop in heavy rain on the M6 Toll and my visibility has still been almost perfect, particularly at motorway speeds where you might think it would be the most dangerous. The bigger risk is, IMO, when there is a little surface spray and you have no means to remove the dirt and grime accumulating on the screen from the car in front's wheels.
60% of the time it works everytime.
