Well if you are sure your voltage metering equipment is right and you had 18V on the disconnected battery, something is really wrong. In theory this voltage shouldn’t be even possible. There must be some internal damage to the battery or short circuit. It gives very high voltage and low current to start the car and overnight it goes flat. Than alternators seems to be chagring with 14V as you measured. I bet the battery overheats as well..... I would get rid of it quickly. Get it out of the car and out of your house. Or lend a battery from a friend for one day and night to test the car and the problem.
