An old thread and wondering how I missed it???
Anyway, it's not gearbox, actuator or ECU in this case, though the actuator will need to be removed for access, I'm affraid to say that this problem is consistent with the trials I did when the loom was damaged and shorting, I would think that the rubber boot was missing off the main actuator loom plug and this has allowed moisture in and the pins are corroding on the rear and occasionally there is a short between a couple of pins and this is confusing the ECU so it just goes mental, not the first time I've seen it and a loom replacement has always cured it.
