Is it right to talk about an oil being too thin or too thick for a particular engine? surely (as the rating describes) a 5w oil is only thinner than a 10w when cold, it is a measurement of the oils viscosity at a specific cold temperature, be it 0w, 5w or 10w it can't be described as thin when it's cold. The latter 40 or 60 rating is the oils hot rating, i.e. the higher the number the higher temperature at which the oil will remain stable and continue to perform properly. The key point being that in-between the two temperature extremes (say at normal running temperature on the road) in theory the viscosity is no different whether it be 5w-40 or a 10w-60, the description in not one of overall viscosity. Isn't the question one of oil quality?
