DyeTech Leathers Ltd, Christchurch New Zealand, Repair Re-colour, Leather products
As a tanner by trade and in particular leather refinishing technician of some 30 odd years I can impart some knowledge here.
In my experiance the cowhide leathers in the Alfa's are of a very high standard [unlike the Honda's of the early nineties] and are tanned to a higher shrinkage temp than on our lounge suites[this is standard for Automotive hide] All have what is known as a finish on the surface and are normally through dyed to a base color close to that of the finish.[Mine is the charcoal color "Ireland Grey"]
This finish is what protects the tannage and gives durability and so long life to the hide.
If your finish is cracking then this needs attention immediately as the edge of the cracks are sharp and repeated flexing will result in damage to the fiber structure over a fairly short period of time.
No conditioner or nugget will fix this.-Visit a reputable leather refinisher and have him grind and refinish.[if cracking is too severe replace panels and refinish to match]
If you have simply wear or some fine scratching on the shoulder or such then it is not so urgent but should be repaired none the less as again the protective coating has worn off and conditioning will not fix this.
If your leather is not worn or cracked then condition only but only with a proprietry leather
conditioner-not bees wax or furniture polish or silicone based product. And not nugget-Nugget is for shoes and will clog the pores so the hide can not breathe. Do not use saddle soap as this is for saddles and other vegatble style tannages
Use no abrasives or alkaline product such as cleaners as leather is left in a slightly acid condition at the end of tannage-Alkali will damage leather.
I use a wax [Elephant Leather Preserver] every six months that leaves the leather really shiny overnight but soaks in leaving the leather a lovely buttery feel.
If like me you have a sunroof and someone has left it open in the rain you may have some shrinkage-Conditioner will not repair but will help to keep the leather supple.
Hope this is of use and happy to answer any questions
