Fan belt pulley snapped - I think
Hello again, Please can you offer your advice. Alfa 147 2.0L
For some time now I felt there was an unusual noise from the belt area. friends say it was just an old car. 01 plate.
Yesterday something broke under the bonnet and I heard metal being tossed around under the hood. It lasted about 10 seconds then stopped but then there was a metal rubbing/grinding noise. No hard shoulder on motorway at this point so I stopped after a few minutes when safe. Still driving fine though at this point. I switched the engine off then on and what a racket from the fan belt area with a metal grinding noise and I thought I could almost see minute shrads of metal (dust like) around the belt cover area.I switched off then on again then after a metallic shreak/snap something metal broke...Then the car sounded perfect "for the first time i may add in months" ...But alas deep down I knew the problem was worse...and so I found...No power steering and low battery warning light.
Suprisingly I was able to drive to work from motorway - had to move (only 2 mins away) but on looking briefly behind the belt cover I saw a long belt sat there loose whilst the engine still turned over. So to summerise, I could still drive the car onto the break down wagon and into my driveway but I had no power steering or battery power. Any thoughts please.
