Help 156 Sportwagon - Idling engine problems "PLEASE HELP"!!

Iv a Problem that I'm hoping someone can shine some light on.. Iv a 2000 plate 156 Sportwagon 1.8TS.. When its stood ticking over it sits at about 600-1000 rpm.. just lately however its fluctuating between 1100 through to about 400rpm (up and down) sometimes hitting about 300rpm and stalling. Also when it dips to 300rpm the dash lights dim and brighten as it goes back through to 1000rpm. The problem also occurs if I'm coming to lights and while coasting at about 10mph take it out of gear the revs drop and stall if it hits 300rpm. I think the problem lies in the fact that its fluctuating between 1000 and 300 (dipping out). When I'm driving there's no power loss through accelerating, its still very pokey. Has anyone had this problem or know what could be the cause?? I had a similar problem with another car and i just turned up the idle speed but iv not owned a Alfa before..
Oh yeah had the cam belt changed last year don't know if that makes any difference ?
I appreciate its a long question
Many thanks

Think I'd start by cleaning the throttle out, and checking for air leaks in the flexible hose leading to it...

I doubt it'll cost very much

Could that still be the case if its not loosing power while accelerating or normal driving ??

It could also be the MAF or Lamda sensor ...

... unplug the MAF and see if it makes any difference ...
