ecu reset

hi have read a bit on here about resetting the ecu giving better performance, but is it something i should only consider doing if i have a running problem or can it be done anytime ?
my car is running fine, maybe a little more power at low revs would be nice but given i have the 1.6 engine in what is probably quite a heavy car i would think its about normal.
only thing i would say is when its sitting at idle and i press the accelerator there is a slight pause-half a second maybe-before the engine reacts, but this is not noticeable while driving.
am just wondering what your thoughts are on this and if its worth giving a reset a go or if its best to leave things alone if its all running well.
