Not a good day today!!
I had a cam belt kit fitted about 4 months ago, but the kit did not contain an auxiliary belt tensioner. The mechanic who did the work said the one fitted was fine!
I have had a slight squeak from what I thought was the tensioner but last week the squeak changed into a loud clicking noise, so booked it in today to get checked out.
He removed the auxiliary belt and confirmed that the tensioner was indeed on it's way out BUT he also advised that because it was in this condition, vibrations on the auxiliary belt had caused the bearings on both the Power Steering Pump and the Alternator were worn and both in need of replacement!!
The costs of the parts from Alfa are £670!!! I have searched around and can get them elsewhere for about £400, which now seems a bargain but the mechanic estimates that the job will tale about 6 hours as it is a bit of a pig to do!!
Is what he is telling me right? Is it a DIY type job as I am reasonably competent but have been put off a bit by what he says.
For info, Alfa prices.........
Power steering Pump £200 + vat
Alternator £190 + vat
Tensioner £150 + vat
Belt £22 + vat
