Had my first bump in nearly 20 years today, on a roundabout a lady decided to exit earlier than she should have done and drove into the side of my car.

My damage is limited to drivers door, front wing, side skirt and cracked windscreen. Her Yaris is much worse! Bonnet, wing, headlight, side lights, grille and the nearside wheel has blue paint all over so possible suspension damage.

Mine is a 51 plate so i'm hoping they don't write it off.

I got quoted £2500 for similar except for the screen.

£2.5K! Goodness me. I'm confident she is insured so thats not a worry.
I guess with the cost of a hire car then costs will very quickly add up on top of that.

Interestingly when the insurers first mentioned a hire car it was a "basic model" they were going to give me, when they realised it wasn't my fault they changed it to "a car the same as yours"!!!

Yep, i had thought of that but after having watched that show on Discovery where they repair damaged cars I'm not so sure its a simple as bolting on a new wing and door. I think it'll need to go on a jig as the drivers door doesn't sit flush at the rear any more so maybe the hinge is bent or worst case the A pillar. Anyhow new windscreen being fitted on Thursday (for some reason they insisted i do that before they would take it away for repair) then lets see what happens!
One other issue is the MOT runs out on the 8th of next month so chances are that'll be while its away which give me no time to sort any issues out and get it retested if needed.

Think they'll write it off in my experience of damage. Car is probably ok though. However before you get excited about accepting their 159. Mine was destroyed in front of me by a bus doing 50mph with loads of witnesses. So bad it made the papers, you wouldn't want to see the pics. They accepted fault and offered a Golf Plus. It was worth £4000 and I could prove that with other ads. They accepted mine was exceptional but would only give £3300. Huge rows followed but to no avail. (started at £2850). The hire car was charged out at an outrageous £1900 for three weeks! And thats why I think I got so little even though it was no fault claim. Be prepared to go to the small claims court, and a lot of hassle! Mine was 1998 V6 Veloce fully loaded low miles and first in the country. Happened in 2006.
Good luck

Hmmm, if they write it off i wonder what they will give me for a 2001 156 1.8 Sportwagon Veloce with 103,000 on the clock?

Also about buying it back - sounds fair enough if you want to keep it forever or track it perhaps but a Cat D or C Alfa will be worth two thirds of ****** all if you try and sell it!

Lol-maybe she wasnt indicating-most people dont, wonder why they bother puttin em on cars really.

Well mines got 123,000 on it and is 53 plate, repairer told me Glass' says £3,600, so yours maybe £2,500?

If its brought back an re repaired cheaper, the difference would more than make up for it being worth less.

She was on my right hand side as though she was going further round the roundabout but she realised she was in the wrong lane and tried to cut across my lane to get to her exit.

She didn't make it!

In fairness to her its a very badly signposted roundabout, its very easy to get in the wrong lane but even so she shouldn't have tried to do what she did.

Cheers for those prices, i'll perhaps look into it a bit more when they assess my car on friday. I was thinking of changing it anyhow so maybe now is a good time.

It wasnt a "scrape"-a 1/2 ton trailer bounced off the front wheel/wing/door.

It needs a new door, wing, wheel, tyre and pretty much all of the suspension on that side, plus a new steering rack cos the track rod end that side has a 90 deg bend in it.

The ins co's repairers took it away and quoted.

That really is stupid isn't it!!!! I would think mine could be fixed fairly cheaply if i was doing it, second hand door and wing, bit of paint, job done. £500-600 including getting a pukka paint job.

Rang the hire car company today, i'm getting a 147 to play with!

Cool about the 147! I saw a leaflet at the repairers about "Alfa Accident Assistance"-they re doing their own Car Crash Line type service, but for Alfa owners only, obviously-that how you got a 147?

I used eper and the parts came to about £1800, the guy said labour would be £600, so the rest must be what the dealer puts on top of the parts from Alfa as eper only shows wht the dealer pays for the parts from Fiat !

Eper gives the retail price from alfa then the price after vat, the web version of ever is an old version because there on edition 54 now :)

All alfa garages 'should' follow alfas prices (we always do) ::)

I'm actually insured with More Than! They have been great so far (!!). My car is being collected tomorrow and the hire car is being delivered tomorrow. The guy on the phone gave me a list of cars to choose from so i went for the Alfa (can't honestly see me moving away from Afla despite all their problems). Audi A4 and Volvo something were the other choices.
I've been looking at replacements over the past few days, i need a small car that will fit into my drive but also take my mountain bikes and diving kit in the back without too much hassle. Its got to have leather, aircon, electric windows all round etc. It also needs to be a bit different, look gorgeous and drive well.
It keeps coming back to a 156 Sportwagon!
So if mine is written off i'm looking for a 156 2.4 JTD Sportwagon Veloce for about £4k!!

#28 ·
Yep I had the same with more than ... gave me a list of cars, I chose one ... then on the day a Citron C5 turns up  I asked the guy about the car I'd requested and he said "we don't even do that kind of car" and anyway you can't choose ...

2001 SW with 103K miles , write off, probably not worth contract repair either . They will not take long to write off for as soon as you agree a price they collect the hire car  Get examples of similar cars and reject any offers that are not generous. No fault accident you should not be out of pocket.

After 14 years in the motor trade and car body shops I would be amazed if that wasnt a write of. Not only is the cost to repair taken into account but the scrap value (which would be a bit) also counts. Also usually the repair cost only has to be 70 % of the value to write it off not the 100 % most expect.

Also if the screen cracked then the shell probably twisted during the inpact. It may have sprung back but if they have to jig it its (much) more expence.

Sorry about the accident but think of it as a way into another ALFA!!!

I noticed on the morning that they came to collect it (it was pouring down) that water is literally dripping through the top of the passenger side door!
Anyhow, the repair company have no idea when they will even start to look at it becasue they have more than 50 cars to assess infront of mine. They photgraph all the damage then send a report to my insureres who then authorise repair (or not!)

Anyhow, the hire car -well its not a Focus or a Vectra or even the promised 147 or Audi A3, its a chuffing 59 plate Mercedes E250 Avantgarde (with only 2000 miles on the clock!!). I remember now why i hate auto boxes as well!!
