Water pump on GT

How essential is it that the water pump is changed with the cam belt on the V6 GT?
Is there warning of failure or can just break and take out the cam belt with the usual disasters? Also, I know you all love the Q2 and there have been cases of holes in the diff case but how strong is the case for needing to have one?

a failed water pump shouldn't take out the cambelt (i used to think it was run off the cambelt but it's not; it's run off an accessories/auxiliary belt). if the plastic impeller cracks and fails, it could either lose effectiveness (ie: not pump water very well, resulting in rising water temp) or possibly jam or block the outlet.

whilst it's not a disaster, replacing the water pump is very much like accessing and replacing the cambelt. hence, most people would upgrade the water pump to the metal impeller version at the same time they have a cambelt changed. so you should be able to wait until you change the cambelt.

Q2 is not only a preventative measure, it greatly improves the performance of the car. so it's a no-brainer.
