There are two airbag lights on the dash:
Yellow - signaling that you turned off the passenger airbag manually with a key. It should flash at startup and then go off if the airbag is switched on or the light stays on if you turned the airbag off because of the child seat. Turn the key in the airbag off switch if it makes a difference.
Red - signalizing a fault in airbag system and while it is on, all airbags are not working. The problem is that if there was a fault in the system (like unplugged connector) and you removed the fault the airbag ECU has stored it in its memory and keeps the light on (or it can go on and disappear randomly). You need to have the error erased on the examiner computer, just removing the fault is not enough, you need to tell the car that it was removed.
Check the light, none of the lights can flash amber on start up and then stay on in red as you describe. You are just probably noticing amber flashing of the passenger airbag check that goes off and then you notice the red light which is on.
The ebay cables are usually ok to comunicate with the engine ECU but they cant talk to ABS, Airbag, A/C, Imobiliser and similar. Its a dealer trip.
