for price of a stat for yours i would replace could have slow response from age
Hello Dave, I've read the whole post in hopes of finding what the problem with my car is. I am not mechaninc however, and for what I read this topic covers only what happens with the thermostat at the beginning (warming up) but not afterwards.
My problem (discussed here: http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-...ng-2001-a.html
) is that the temp goes up normally, up to 92-95 the first fans speed turns on, but the temp keeps going up to about 3/4 of the gauge so the second speed of the fans turn on. The fans stay turned on for about 5 minutes trying to cool the temp, which they finally do after 5-10 minutes and get the temp back to 90. Then the cycle begins again.
I was told by the mechanic this is NOT a water pump failure because if I rev up the engine, the temp goes down. The mechaninc said he tested the car with the stat "cancelled" (he said he didn't remove it) and the problem persisted. He also said he tried another radiator but this changed nothing. As you can see on the other thread he suggested it could be a head gasket failure, but there is no water consumption, no strange substances on the filler cap and no oil contamination.
I am totally lost and would love to try another stat to see if this solves the issue, however the problem is there are no Alfa spares or garages in this country so I would greatly appreciate given your knowledge if the symptoms I described could be related to the stat so I can search for a new one on the internet.
It is now summer time in Guatemala and the only way I can keep the temp to a lower degree is turning on the heater, my Alfa has become a moving sauna
I also checked the link you provided a few posts before but there was no thermostat for my car: it is a 2001 Alfa 156 V6 with 2.5L (there were only thermostats for the 3.2 V6)
Thank you very much for your help.
