147 clunky brakes

Drove my wifes 147 a few days back and noticed that the brakes make a sort of clunk/ping when you reverse and apply them. They seem to snatch on too when doing this. There isn't an issue when going forwards and the car isn't pulling to one side under braking, drives straight, etc. Anyone had any experience of this? My description is not the best but hopefully someone has an idea of what is going on. The car had all the rear handbrake cables done a couple of months back and the rear pads were changed at the same time but it feels like it is coming from the front brakes rather than the rear.
