Goodness gracious. If the price of a stat has you running for cover, then what do you intend doing when its time to change the cambelt.
The honest truth is you can't run and maintain an Alfa V6 properly on the cheap, or any Alfa come to that. This comes straight from my wallet having dished out £800 in normal maintainance last week. The parts alone came to about £350 (cam belt kit, water pump, auxiliary belt and tensioner, Oil/diesel filters plus all the gubbins that go with having the car serviced properly)
Sometimes I think I have been lucky over 20 years in having five Alfas that have been reliable. I suspect keeping them properly maintained might just have helped.
