I have a 2003 147 Selespeed which has been giving me the following problems for a while now:
1) Particularly from cold. When pulling off the engine stops and I get a Selespeed System failure error or sometimes an oil engine pressure low error. usually from 1st gear, but sometimes can happen in other gears. This has also occasionally happened while warm and dumped me on Islands. After a few restarts I can usually engage a gear. Cold/damp weather definitely makes it worse. Sometimes after showing the error and appearing to have "stalled" the car seems to "bump start" itself and I can continue to drive (quite a hard whack at times). To add, less revs or trying to pull off in 2nd gear usually gets me away.
2) Sometimes the system drops to Neutral and after a second or two of frantic gear selection will find a gear again. This usually happens while at a good road speed not gear dependent but generally around 2nd and 3rd.
3) Sometimes After problem 1 I try to engage gear, but I can hear the Selespeed try to engage 1st a few times before returning to Neutral. A few restarts fixes the problem.
The Selespeed Actuator was replaced within 12 Months as it was known to be faulty.
I've just taken the car to my nearest Alfa dealer to get it diagnosed and they have said that the computer has one Selespeed related error from some time ago, so the technician was not so worried about that. But there is a permanent error on the Speed Sensor.
So they have said they need to check the wiring and replace the Speed Sensor for £160 + VAT.
He has said that this might not be the only problem, the most worrying part was that he said that sometimes the sensor's position can drop and can rub on another part which can cause damage to the other part. "You can usually see swarf on it". He said that if this part is damaged it's usually "terminal". I've not really questioned yet what he means by "terminal", as I wanted to get you guys opinions.
Does all of the above sound sensible?
Why would a permanently faulty sensor cause intermittent problems?
And can anyone with experience of Sele's help me to understand this other thing of wear causing "terminal" damage. Sorry I have no more info as yet. Hopefully the speed sensor will fix it. But he has scared me a fair bit. I know how much Selespeed actuators are so was dreading it being that.
