If your clubs are obscuring the catch when you look into the boot through the "ski hatch" you could be in trouble, as this is pretty much the only way to access the catch to perform an "emergency release".
What normally happens is that a slightly sticky cable prevents the little release lever on the catch (on the boot threshold, not the lid) from returning to its correct position, and when you shut the boot it gets jammed the wrong side of the release on the boot lid.
The way I have overcome this is to release the catch from inside, via the "ski hatch". You need to lever off the plastic trim that covers the catch, and then jiggle/lever/force the catch mechanism. You need a good torch, a long screwdriver, and long arms!
