Yeh but alfa cambelts are strange nothing like ant cam belt I've done before. After I put the belt on I turned it over by hand twice and it was still timed up. I can't take this belt off and reuse it can I? Or is it still new enough that I can reuse it? Is the variator really that big of an issue? I thought if was just a noise
If it's done a handful of miles, you can probably re-use it if you're on a budget.
The variator shouldn't cause any issues, but some have suggester that it leads to premature cam-lobe wear. I think the jury's still out on that one.
Before you do anthing, you might want to check and clean the blue plug at the back/left of the engine (it's the cam sensor connector). It might just be loose/dirty.
If that doesn't fix it, remove the belt cover and clean out any debris (gently) from the cam sensor. They contain a magnet, and any metal/rust in them could be throwing the reading off.
The other thing that damages phase sensor is a misshapen sensor ring behind the exhaust cam pulley. Usually they cause terminal damage though.
I had one in a GTV once that did the opposite. It would be ok when the engine was cold, but fail when it got warm. Just had to change it (£65 or so).
