Petrol vs Diesel Comparison

Anyone driven the 1.8 petrol and early 140bhp diesels?

Does the weight of the diesel ruin the handling?

Does the diesel feel faster? Is it as fun to drive?

Does it sound like a tractor from cold (and when idleing when warm?)

Any other comments appreciated - I'm thinking of changing for the fuel economy...

you can feel the extra weight up front of the 5 cylinder diesel, but the torque from the engine is adictive

bear in mind though they aren't as economical as you might imagine, don't expect to be getting regularly in the 50's. my old 136 model never bettered 39mpg for a mix of town & country driving, 42 to 43 out of town. my old punto 1.9jtd averaged 53mpg for the same journeys as the 156 getting 39mpg

think the 150 is about the most economical 2.4 engine, although the 1.9 is probably the best on fuel.

try a search. LOADS of info/discusion on here

Those diesels are dreadful tractors....that why they outsold the petrols by a factor of 2:1 in overall 156 production

Frankly you have to treat them as completely different models. If handling is a major priority the 1.9s are going to be better than the 2.4s, but once you have driven a 2.4, you might not want a 1.9. as the engine is so seductively driveable. Its so difficult and so subjective to advise someone else. I certainly don't think our 2.4 handles badly, but it can't possibly be as nimble as your 1.8.

You really do have to drive one. They only sound like diesels when you start them first thing. Once you get on the road you'd not know, apart from the narrowish power band, and the oomph you get in that powerband..which is impressive.

As ever you have to get one with a complete service history. Like any Alfa they do need to be maintained properly, and that does not always come cheap.

The best thing to do if you are worried abiut the 2.4's handling is to fit some better suspension.

I am not getting into the petrol V's Diesel debate though.

the 1.9 Diesel weighs about the same as the Twinsparks

the 2.4 Diesel weighs about the same as the V6

With the diesels remapped they out perform either equivalent petrols in every way apart from the sound ...
