GT - Severe condensation in xenon headlight unit
I discovered that some kind soul has damaged my xenon headlight, which I noticed on Friday morning. The inside of the headlight was fillled with condensation - not just a little but a lot of water droplets. It looks like someone reversed into the bumper (very slight scratch) but touched the headlight unit too. There is a tiny hairline crack at the base of the headlight.
Anyway, dealer wanted £800 for a new unit. Local garage suggested taking out the fog light bulb, which is the easiest to access on a GT (just twist off the back cover) and turn on main beams and take a hair dryer to it. I stuffed a couple of silica gel moisture absorbing sachets that you find in electronics packaging into the hole where the foglight bulb goes too.
Lo and behold, after about half an hour I managed to get rid of all the water and the silica absorbed it all. To seal the hairline crack, I simply drew a line of superglue over it. It is entirely invisible because luckily the crack is on the bottom edge and concealed by the bumper. £800 saved except for a little time and effort.
