GT tyres for icy weather

My lovely GT has been a real let-down in the ice and snow. No grip at all! I have had to borrow my wife's Citroen C3 to get to work. I think the Goodyear F1 Eagles may be to blame. They seem to have no real tread blocks to cut into the snow. Has anyone else experienced the same problem? I can drive in bad weather having been brought up in Derbyshire but I could not get the Alfa to move! Next time round I will sacrifice a bit of dry and wet road performance for a pinch of decent grip in the snow. I have heard Vredesteins are good. Does anyone have any experience or a better recommendation?
