You guys come up with the goods every time so here's a little one for you.
I need (preventatively not because the one I have has died) a new battery for my 156 1.6 2003 Alfa.
Best price for a name I have heard of is from Perfromance Batteries of Tewkesbury as they come up with a Varta for £50 inc carriage and 4 yr warranty. This comes from entering the car details on their website.
Would anyone recommend something else as am always willing to pay more for better quality?
Varta is very good quality. Check the dimensions of your battery and note the numbers: Ah rating, CCA rating, etc. and match using those, as quite often some of the battery sites give incorrect battery. If that which is quoted is the correct one, then that is a good price.
alternatively if look at the big wholesale stores / cash and carry (costco springs to mindhttp://www.costco.co.uk/default.html ) - often do bosch at a good price
What armoore said - the Amp hour (Ah) rating is how much charge it can store. For a 156 it should be more than 60Ah (if your draw 6Amp it will go dead in 10 hours)
Most batteries have 1yr warranty, someone willing to give 4yr warranty on a battery believes in their battery. Should be good.
Just checked the site you mentioned: The Alphaline is £50: Power 62Ah and Cold Crank Amp 580Amps - The Varta is more expensive and less rated Ah and CCA
Varta Silver Dynamic has a 5 year warranty and newly developed internals-Power Frame Technology.I got one for £70 for our 147 2.0TS from National Tyre.It is also fitment for my 159 which could be useful.
It is exactly the same battery as the Silver one badged as Bosch(so you pay for the name),sold at Halfords as HSB013 for £114.99They also quote a heavy duty HSB075 to fit your car at £99.99(???),so you might track down a Varta Silver Dynamic for less than I did.
That battery was for a 1.6.... the one I got was for a 2 litre and was indeed 190mm high - infact exactly the same dimensions as I required, CCA and capacity were higher
