auto box strange is this right

my 156 2.0 litre selespeed,i have had autos before but when i select gear when you take your foot off the brake the car creeps forward and holds its own weight on banks, but with my alfa i put my foot on the brake select 1st take foot off brake and nothing happens untill i hit the throttle then there is a lag before the clutch comes in and then goes, and if i stop on a very small incline back she rolls,is this the norm for alfas,or is the clutch or fluid iffy

Normal for a Selespeed.
It is not a normal automatic.

Use the handbrake when stopped...

yes this is correct , the selespeed is not like a traditional auto box , it uses a normal gearbox with an actuator to do all the gear selection , clutch etc. with its own separate ECU also.

there are loads of past threads that can explain more in depth.
