Would item 6 in the image below be the CV joint that he doesn't have???
Along with items 2,3,7 and 8 in the second image???
I'm glad you post those pics at it simplifies my response greatly!
It seems that somehow item 9 - the small circular clip - had somehow come off, or not been put on correctly at some point. This has caused the male part of the tripod fitting thing to pop out.
My mechanic has reassembled everything and it seemed to be all tight.
Car is now fine and it only ended up costing me £30 for an hours labour
The thing is. Under what circumstances could this happen? The only thing I can think of that might put the suspension under a bit of load is my driveway entry. It hard left over a fairly pronounced hump over the path then down a fairly steep drive. It nearly bottoms the car out (doesn't touch though). Could that, done twice every day, cause enough pull at the point to cause it work loose?
Strange anyway. I'm going to take it back to my mechanic in a few weeks so he can check all the gubbins are still looking in their rightful place.
Thanks for all the advice and thanks to Gus for being a potential source of bits at short notice
On a related but totally different subject....the ****** recovery driver has managed to gouge out 3 large scratches in my towing eye cover and slightly scratch the bumper around that area...the utter fackin donkey! I wasn't there at the time and my wife doesn't pay attention to such things!! Will have to see what they say about that tomorrow. Suspect it might be a case of it "was already like that sir".....
