147 2.0 Selespeed - Problems! Help please!

I have a Y-reg 147 2.0 Selespeed that I bought second hand a couple of years back (50k miles on the clock). I think I should point out that I'm no specialist in cars and I really could do with some help.

Firstly, I just want to say how much I love the car... it was always my favourite car as I kid and as soon as I'd saved up enough cash I knew I needed to buy one... I would quite happily drive this car for the rest of my days... but it is a nightmare!

I get the regular Motor Control System failures that flash up and then go and I've sort of learnt to live with that. Is this a regular problem for people? Also sometimes it doesn't like to go in first gear and it takes 10-20 attempt to get it in?

However, my main problem happened today and I think is related to the severe cold. When I got in the car this evening, after it had been parked in the freezing cold all day, I managed to drive it about 500 yards before more lights flashed up on my dashboard then you'd see on a christmas tree. I think I had ABS failure, ECU failure and a failure beginning with Y (maybe YCU???). The radio turned itself off. The dashboard then blacked over. I pulled over in and had to ditch it in the snow thinking the worst. I tried to start the car up again but it was having none of it. I decided that there was nothing I could do so prepared to trot off to the station for the journey home and alas the central locking wouldn't even work so I had to lock it with the key.

As I said I'm no car genius but is this simply a case of the battery giving up on me?! There seem to be loads of electrics on the car as its got the electric seats etc. Is there anything I can do to try and prevent this in the future. Or is the car's computer shot?

In addition, I have my suspicions about the heated rear window as it seems to take ages to defrost the window and I even get frost on the inside of the window!!

Any help / suggested repairs would be much appreciated!! Am I staring at the end of a hefty bill from my local Italian garage owner (who loves the car and says he wants to buy it off me!).

HI there,

other experts know much more than me, but it could very well be the battery. We don't get much cold here, (although I grew up in NZ with it), but it will certainly wreak havok with a battery that isn't 100%. Do you know how old the battery is?? Either way, 1st step is to get a brand new good battery and see what happens!

Having said all that, your other issues do perhaps point to something else going on that may have gotten worse, so I'd have to be honest and say don't get your hopes up too much, just in case it's a nasty one.

But, assuming the battery is older than the time you've had the car, it's worth trying that first, I'd be quietly hopeful myself.

Good luck and don't sell it!! You may well regret it.

Yeah, for 'christmas tree' symptoms I'd suspect the battery. The rear de-mist might be a sign of the alternator undercharging, but they're fairly bullet-proof...

Yes, with all those symptoms together, it looks like a flat battery.

It sounds like the battery and that is the cheapest option to start with. If your battery is dead the alternator can not put enough in for it to stay charged with all the electrics on.
If you go to a reputable garage that supplies batteries they can test the battery for you. Avoid the usual chains as they will just want to sell you a new battery regardless of whether yours is good or bad.
I agree with Iainfm very unlikely to be the alternator.
Smaky told me it is usually in the winter when the Selespeeds get problems with a weak battery.
Try the battery change first and take it from there. If the problems still persist and depending where you are situated I can put you in touch with one of the best guys for the selespeed.
Good luck and hope for you it is just the battery.

Thank you everyone for your help... much appreciated!

I will take a look at it tomorrow as I'm going to take the day off work to sort it out. I'll let you all know how it goes. Beautiful cars though... I don't think I could ever part with it... I'd like to stick in a garage after a fair few more years of enjoyment. Apparently my car is one of the first few 147 selespeeds off the production line that's why this garage owner is interested in it... not sure if that's true or what? Would be good to drive it back over to Italy one day when I retire... dunno if it would ever make it though!!

I too think my battery is failing, same symptons (or so mrs P says, so needs to be properly checked out ) eventually started, but left for three days and it was -5 when she was trying to get it going.

what is a Moura battery, made in Brazil?

where they standard fit or is it likely to be a replacement?
