Different Diff

Ok so I have read up several threads on here about the Q2 diffs. I undertand that once a wheel spins the diff acts as an open diff. So does this not help at all in icy conditions? I presume you can buy electronic diffs but where from? and would that solve the problem. I'm thinking of fitting a Q2 to my jtd as the torque can fairly easily overwhelm one of the wheels even in dry condtions. So how does it tell that its about to loose traction then cos surely the second it does the diff becomes open???

BMW E12 M535i, JC racing diff, Gaz coilover, Powerflex.
Alfa 156 GTA, Q2, Super sprint, CF2, EQ, KW coilovers, Eibach rollbars, Powerflex.
Alfa Mito QV , BMC filter.

Don't know of any electronic diffs, but there are two mechanical ones on the market for the 147/156/GT range: Q2 for some models and there's third-party one (whose name escapes me at the moment).
